It was about 14 years ago, the last time I visited the Post
office. I was in senior high school. I had a penpall from another country. They
are Susi Poschl and Julia Poschl. They are sisters. They lived in Germany.
Sitting at the post office chair waited for our turn also
remembering me, the time when Christmas was going near, sent postcards to our
family and friends who lived in Jakarta, Timor Leste (when it is a part of
Indonesia), and another residence.
That was how we
communicate with family and also friends. It was not possible using the home
telephone, cause it cost too much.
It’s so rare to find any letter at home nowadays. People go
to Post Office just for money and packages reasons, but not for a letter. If
there is, it probably just for introducing stamps and learning about the
communication tools history' that are
going dissapear to kids, I think.
Letters are replaced by Short Message Service that sent
using a hand phone, or email, social networks and any other tools as we known
nowadays . It’s simple, it’s also saving cost and time, messages arrive in seconds. But there is something
gone. The moment when we were waiting for a reply. The moment when we were
waiting for Christmas Cards. The activity of collecting stamps.
Like today, when my son asked me to take him to the post
office. Because I have to finish my study far away from my husband workplace,
then we have to live separately for a while.
This idea came when we were sitting together, spent time
just laughing and telling story. I said “I think Jericho needs to write a
letter, and send to Papa when we are far away, no texting but a piece of
paper.” Everyone seemed so enthusiastic and agreed for that.
And it happened this morning. We went to
post office, sent his letter to Papa. He was so happy and excited. He kept
asked : “Mom, where did my letter go? I just can only see the man, but where
did my letter go? Has papa received my letter?” Wow it’s a wonderfull
experience.
When we arrived, my husband called us. My
son picked up the phone and couldn’t wait badly to ask : “Papa, I’ve just from
the Post office sending you my letter, have you got it, Papa?”
It needs 4 or 5 days to be in my husband
hand. I can feel the moment, the waiting moment like I used to feel. And it
will be so much fun.
There will be another visiting to post
office next time, sending letter, cards, and my son handy crafts.
I’m sure it will become a new activity for
us. There will be cards that are addressed to family, friends, on birthdays,
Chritsmas or another celebrating days. And it can brings memories, appreciates,
Love and a lot of fun for me and my son.
We use technology for our communication
tools right now with many worthy reasons in it. But it's wisely enough to keep the old one for
our children.
Someday I would like to receive a Christmas
Cards, Letters from my son and grandchild. We both me and my husband will love
it much. Amen.
